Hello, fellow adventurers! If you’re a fan of the great outdoors, stunning landscapes, and the thrill of a good walk, then you’re in for a treat. Recently, I joined the Burton Fell-walkers for a memorable three-day excursion through the breath taking Yorkshire Dales. This trip, a true Dales favourite, took us through some of the region’s most scenic spots, including the iconic Langstrothdale valley. As someone who also cherishes Lakeland walks, I can confidently say this journey rivals some of my best experiences. Let me take you through the highlights of this incredible adventure!

Day 1: Exploring Gordale Scar and Beyond

Our journey began on June 17th, 2025, with a morning walk to the dramatic Gordale Scar. The rugged limestone cliffs and cascading waterfalls provided a stunning backdrop as we navigated the rocky terrain. The afternoon brought a longer walk, showcasing the diverse landscapes of the Dales. One of the standout moments was capturing the serene beauty of a gentle stream winding through lush greenery, with a heron gracefully standing in the shallows (see the image above). This peaceful scene set the tone for the days ahead.

Day 2: Conquering Great Whernside

On June 18th, we tackled the challenge of climbing Great Whernside. The effort was well worth it, as the panoramic views from the summit were nothing short of spectacular. This day reminded me why the Yorkshire Dales are a walker’s paradise, with rolling hills and open moorland stretching as far as the eye could see. The sense of achievement and the fresh air made it a day to remember.

Day 3: A Wildlife-Rich Walk from Buckden to Yockenthwaite

The final day, June 19, 2025, was a delightful conclusion to our trip. Starting in Buckden, we walked to Cray and then on to Yockenthwaite, soaking in the natural splendour of the area. This walk was particularly special due to the abundance of wildlife we encountered—lapwings, curlews, stonechats, deer, a hare, butterflies, and even a barn owl graced us with their presence. The path along the escarpment from Cray to Hubberholme (or vice versa) offered splendid views down the Wharfe Valley towards Kettlewell, a highlight for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

Why Langstrothdale Stands Out

A personal favourite of mine is Langstrothdale, the source of the River Wharfe. This valley is one of the most scenic and interesting in the Dales, boasting some of England’s best remote picnic spots. The gentle flow of the river, surrounded by verdant hills and ancient woodlands, makes it an ideal place to pause and enjoy a packed lunch. Walking across the ridge from Cray to Hubberholme provides breath-taking vistas, making it a must-do for any Dales enthusiast. The terrain is manageable for most walkers, with a mix of flat paths and gentle climbs that reward with stunning scenery.

Tips for Your Own Dales Adventure
- Gear: Wear sturdy walking boots and bring a waterproof jacket, as the weather can change quickly.
- Wildlife: Keep your camera ready—wildlife sightings are a highlight!
- Picnic Spots: Look for quiet spots along the River Wharfe in Langstrothdale for a peaceful break.
- Fitness: These walks are suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness, but pacing yourself is key.
This three-day trip with the Burton Fell-walkers reaffirmed my love for the Yorkshire Dales. While I have many Lakeland favourites, Langstrothdale’s unique charm and accessibility make it a standout. Whether you’re a seasoned walker or just starting out, I encourage you to explore this beautiful region.
