On Saturday 10th October, I’ll be returning to Kendal as the featured author at Verbalise, Brewery Arts’ long-running spoken-word evening.
Verbalise brings established writers and emerging voices together on the same stage. Poets, storytellers, novelists, comedians and songwriters are all welcome, creating the sort of varied and supportive evening in which new work can be heard and shared.
I’ll be talking about my journey as a writer and reading a selection of my work. That journey has taken me along the Pennine Way, across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela and from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay; although rarely by the most predictable route.

I am also currently working on something rather different: a murder-mystery novel set in a northern village during the 1930s.
Alongside writing books, I have had poetry published in anthologies and online, and I regularly perform at open-mic events across the North of England. There is something special about hearing words spoken aloud in a room full of people; a poem or story takes on a life that it does not always reveal on the printed page.
Verbalise has been providing that opportunity since 2009. Hosted by Ann Grant, it offers a friendly and welcoming platform for writers, including those taking their first steps into live performance. There will also be open-mic contributions of up to four minutes from writers working across different forms.
Whether you already enjoy poetry and spoken word, are interested in the writing life, or simply fancy hearing something new, I would be very pleased to see you there.
