Tomorrow, Sunday 4th October 2026, I’ll be returning to Holden Clough Nurseries, near Bolton-by-Bowland, for another day of books, conversation, fresh air and, most importantly, slowing down for a while.
What began in the summer as a Digital Detox Day has now found its regular home as Slow Down Sunday, taking place on the first Sunday of every month at Holden Clough.
The idea is wonderfully simple: step away from the screens, put the phone down for a while and enjoy some proper time in the real world.
Holden Clough is the perfect setting for it. There are beautiful gardens and paths to explore, plants and flowers growing around you, the Reading Room Kitchen to visit, and plenty of space simply to wander, talk and enjoy being somewhere that moves at a gentler pace.
And, of course, there will be books.
I’ll be there tomorrow with a selection of mine, including Show Me The Way to Santiago, A Very Alternative Coast to Coast, The Owl and the Mole, Imprints, and others.
The Promoting Yorkshire Authors (PYA) stall will also be there, giving visitors the chance to discover books by independent authors, meet writers, pick up signed copies and perhaps even have that conversation that finally persuades you to start writing the book you have been carrying around in your head for years.
Tomorrow you can:
- Browse and buy books from independent authors
- Come and have a chat about writing, walking, poetry, publishing – or anything else!
- Explore the nursery and its wonderful outdoor spaces
- Visit the Reading Room Kitchen
- Enjoy some screen-free family time
- Take a few hours simply to slow down
There is something increasingly valuable about spending time without constantly checking a screen or waiting for the next notification.
Sometimes the best things happen when we put the technology away: a conversation with a stranger, discovering a new book, noticing what is growing around us, or simply having enough quiet to think.
So if you are anywhere near Holden, Bolton-by-Bowland, Lancashire, BB7 4PF tomorrow, come along and say hello.
